Overview: Edinboro University is a small public university in a rural part of northwestern Pennsylvania that stands out for its supportive environment and manageable campus size. While it doesn't have the newest infrastructure, it earns a place as an accessible campus because of its strong commitment to accommodating students and providing individualized support.

Physical Navigation: Edinboro offers a fairly navigable campus, especially compared to other larger universities.

  • Most academic buildings include ramps, elevators, and accessible entrances.

  • Campus layout is compact, making distances shorter and more manageable.

  • Terrain is mostly flat with mild slopes, which is helpful for wheelchair users.

  • Some older buildings may have fewer modern accessibility features, but access is still typically available.

Overall, it's not perfect, but the smaller size makes daily navigation more realistic and less exhausting compared to many other campuses.

Accessible Living: Accessible housing at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania is practical, supportive, and individualized, making it a strong option for students who want a manageable living setup. The university offers ADA-compliant rooms across several residence halls, rather than isolating accessible students in one building.

Rooms include:

  • Wide doorways and clear floor space for wheelchair movement.

  • Accessible furniture layouts, with adjustments available if needed.

  • Lowered fixtures and reachable storage areas.

Bathrooms:

  • Roll-in or modified showers in select rooms.

  • Grab bars and accessible sinks.

  • Access to private or semi-private bathrooms for students with medical needs.

Students can request:

  • Single rooms for medical or personal care needs.

  • Specific roommate considerations.

  • Room placement near elevators, exits, or key campus buildings.

One of Edinboro's biggest strengths is that housing and disability services work closely together, allowing for more personalized room assignments. Residence halls are also generally within close distance to classes and dining, which helps reduce daily strain.

Campus Transportation: Transportation at Edinboro is simple, accessible, and surprisingly useful for a smaller rural campus - especially because of its connection to the regional transit system.

Campus Shuttle System:

  • The university operates a campus shuttle loop (Edinboro Express) that runs during the academic year and connects key areas of campus.

  • Shuttles are designed to be wheelchair accessible, making daily movement more manageable.

Erie Metropolitan Transit Authority (EMTA):

  • Students can ride public buses for free with their student ID.

  • Route 14 directly serves Edinboro and the university, connecting students to Erie and the surrounding areas.

  • Buses are wheelchair accessible and part of a larger county-wide system.

  • EMTA offers "LIFT" paratransit, a door-to-door service for those who cannot use standard buses.

Transportation at Edinboro stands out for its free, accessible public transit and paratransit options, which many small schools don't offer. While it's not the most frequent or extensive system, it provides real independence and off-campus access.

Adaptive Sports

Adaptive Sports Programs Include:

  • Wheelchair basketball (Men's and Women's).

  • Air rifle/target shooting (inclusive participation).

  • Powerlifting (adaptive participation opportunities).

Through the Adaptive Intramural and Recreational Sports Programs (AIRS):

  • Swimming.

  • Bowling.

  • Exercise/fitness programs.

  • Snow tubing and seasonal activities.

Edinboro's adaptive sports focus on wheelchair basketball, with additional recreational and fitness activities available. It's not a huge program, but it offers a real mix of competitive and casual participation, which is solid for a smaller school.

Student Organizations

Edinboro University has some disability related organizations and programs, but they are more limited and specialized rather than a wide variety of clubs.

Delta Alpha Pi - International Honor Society for Students with Disabilities:

  • Recognizes students with disabilities who have strong academic achievement.

  • Focuses on advocacy, awareness, and leadership.

  • One of the earliest chapters in the country was founded at Edinboro.

Medical Access

Medical access at Edinboro is reliable and well-supported, especially for a smaller campus, though it requires planning for more advanced care.

On Campus: Health & Wellness Center

  • Treatment for minor illnesses and injuries.

  • Routine check-ups and general medical care.

  • Basic health support and referrals to specialists if needed.

Nearby Medical Facilities:

  • UPMC Hamot Hospital for emergency services, surgery, and specialized treatment (about 20 - 25 minutes away in Erie).

  • UPMC Primary Care Edinboro for regular doctor visits.

  • Local urgent care centers for non-emergency treatment.

Pharmacies:

  • CVS Pharmacy.

Edinboro offers strong basic on-campus care, combined with accessible off-campus medical support. While the rural setting means traveling for major care, the availability of nearby providers and a major hospital helps ensure students still have reliable access to medical services.

Disability Services (OSD)

Edinboro's disability services stand out for their hands-on, individualized approach, especially in housing and academic support. While not the most expansive program, the ability to work closely with staff and receive tailored accommodations makes it a strong and reliable system.

Services Provided:

  • Extended time on exams and reduced distraction testing.

  • Note-taking assistance and alternative format materials (digital, audio, etc.).

  • Priority schedule to help schedule accessible classes.

  • Assistive technology support (as available).

The OSD also helps coordinate with professors to ensure accommodations are properly implemented in each class.

How it Works:

  • Students must register with the Office for Students with Disabilities and provide documentation.

  • After approval, students meet with staff to create an individualized accommodation plan.

  • The OSD then provides official accommodation letters for professors and helps coordinate housing and campus needs.

Students are expected to communicate with professors each semester, but the OSD remains available for ongoing support and adjustments.

They Advocate for:

  • Equal access in classrooms, ensuring accommodations are properly followed.

  • Accessible housing and campus facilities.

  • Inclusive participation in programs, activities, and campus events.

Helps Resolve Issues like:

  • Professors are not fully implementing or understanding accommodations.

  • Inaccessible classrooms, buildings, or course materials.

  • Conflicts related to testing environments or academic adjustments.

  • Housing concerns, including room setup or accessibility needs.

  • Barriers to participation in campus activities or programs.

Available Scholarships

Edinboro University offers a range of general scholarships, but there are very limited options specifically for students with disabilities.

  • Students can apply for academic merit scholarships based on GPA and achievements.

  • Need-based financial aid is available through FAFSA, including grants and institutional aid.

  • The university recognizes students through Delta Alpha Pi, an honor society for students with disabilities, which can lead to recognition and additional opportunities, though it is not a direct scholarship.

Most students at Edinboro will rely on general scholarships and financial aid rather than disability-specific funding, so applying to outside scholarships is especially important.
